Muscle flexing in the Baltic

Filipino-owned International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) is looking to equip its newly acquired, 60 hectare Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) operation in Gdynia with five more ship-toshore cranes, 17 RTGs, 44 tractors and 54 trailers. ICTSI has earmarked roughly US$60 mill for the additional cargo handling gear or 80 percent of total longterm expansion costs. It is not yet clear when the initial orders would be placed, although a company spokeswoman in Manila said the units would be deployed starting in 2004 to bolster BCT’s existing pool of four Panamax quay cranes, 11 RTGs, 20 tractors, two straddle carriers and two RMGs. Although the aim is to raise capacity to 800,000 TEU/year from the current 350,000-400,000 TEU/year, ICTSI Ltd’s SVP and BCT’s CEO Thomas E Falknor said it was possible to go beyond this “as the terminal is land-rich and operations could be adjusted to make more effective use of satellite land areas.”
